Helen was an advocate for the education and treatment of deaf children. She herself had become deaf around 1918. She ran the Lake Erie School of Speech Reading, and was an officer of the Cleveland Association for the Hard of Hearing and the American Federation of Organizations for the Hard of Hearing. The house was modified in 1885, and the library furnished as a memorial to the late president and as a repository for his papers.
